A little friend in Faro

A holiday to Faro, capital of the Algarve region of Portugal requires a mandatory exploration of the Ria Formosa Nature Park.

The warm waters of the southern region of Portugal has created a beautiful landscape of sand banks, mudflats and dunes, saltmarshes and forest areas, wetlands an amazing coastal lagoon. The islands situated within it’s vicinity are gifted with long stretches of sand dunes and clear sandy beaches with pristine clean water.

The lighthouse becomes visible on a boat ride from Faro towards the islands.

It was on an island visit that I met the little fellow in my illustration above, waiting all fresh and ready for his morning ride. His sense of adventure infectious, I believe he was inviting me to join him on a morning ride to breathe in the clean air and explore the surroundings.

The area has provided respite and sanctuary to migratory birds that travel here during the Northern winters or simply as a stopover as they fly further afield. Apart from the resting space of birds, the flora and fauna of the region is home to a diverse amount of marine species.

Portugal remains one of the most popular tourist destinations, a wonderful respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday living.
