Elephant

Stealing Mangoes

It had been a long hot summer and in need of respite, the young elephant breaks free and escapes.

Deep into the forest he wanders, wearing all the paraphernalia, customary livery worn by one in his privileged standing.

The procession began in the early hours, before any light had brought visibility to his surroundings.

Tired, hungry and fearing the constant noise of drums or fireworks, he attempted an escape route. Hoping his disappearance  wouldn’t be missed and maybe find some respite for himself.

As he wandered through the forest he came upon a large spread of a mango tree in a clearing. The fruit had the right juicy ripe texture he cherished.

Forlorn and scared, he stops to enjoy one true moment of magic and sweetness in stealing mangoes. Life may return to it’s dreary long stretch of work but for now, he had a joyful moment of peace with nature.

The painting was inspired from a video created by The Bushcamp Company about Elephants of Mfuwe Lodge in Zambia. The elephants walk through the reception of the lodge between late October to mid-December to access and consume wild mango fruits.

I have painted an Asian elephant in acrylics, wearing gold metal accessories as he’s part of a parade for the day. His most blissful moment is spent under the mango tree, enjoying some ripe fruit and quietness. The painting incorporates aspects of traditional Kalamkari art in it’s style.
