Shimmering Light

It was right about at noon when I emerged radiant in my red coat as it shone brightly against the pale bluish water.
My shimmering light was indeed shining amazingly for all the world to see and drawing towards me all the energies in the whole wide universe, strengthening my being under that beautiful bright golden-yellow sky.

All of a sudden, I found myself trapped, held oh so tight by a tiny hand. For the life of me I just couldn’t breathe and I cried for help. Oh, I knew I had to escape; I just had to get away.

Soon there were these two large eyes staring at me. I shivered and shuddered.

Then, taking a deep, deep breath, and mustering up courage, I shouted – ‘Hey little boy! you have got yourself the wrong kind; I am not the sort you want to disturb cos I got friends in high places.’

The little hand then tightened its grip and those large round eyes came nearer still; this time I pleaded ‘just leave me be, won’t you?’, and the little boy replied – ‘you are pretty enough for my glass bowl’, and chuckled.

It was then, I – the bright red fish who merrily swims in the pond explained, ‘if you set me free, I will come here every day for you to see my glory. But if you trap me in your room, you will find that I am not as shiny as you see. For in your bowl I cannot swim free and breathe in the wonderful air or sparkle in the sun. It is in the joy of living with nature that I am so pretty ‘.

On hearing this, the little boy sat on the banks of the pond and seemed quite lost in thought. What was he thinking? I let that very thought go around in my mind once more – oh, what was he thinking? Indeed what?

So there as I was being held, not so tight anymore, but the grip was gentler, I wondered if he would rather see the handsome little shiny red fish swim merrily in the beautiful blue pond or would he rather see him just wither away in boredom and gloom in some place far, far away from his beautiful blue home?

And so, it came to be that the little boy did take pity on this poor little creature – he became aware of the beauty in the world and the goodness in nature, and along with that he also became aware of the goodness within him and felt immense compassion for the fish.

The little boy was far kinder now, as if he was holding something very special in the cups of his hands, and ever so caringly dipped his hands in the water.

I saw him smiling and waving goodbye, and I smiled back at him and sent out a big kiss and went my merry way – that night, the little boy had the most interesting tale to share with his family.
